Buddha Belly (Jatropha podagrica)

Flourishing in bright, warm environments, the Jatropha podagrica produces a striking, swollen basal stem (caudex) topped with large, architectural lobed leaves and vibrant coral-red inflorescences. The iconic caudex, vitally serves as its main water reservoir, allowing it to survive drought, pulling water from its own reserves ensuring growth during drought. Jatropha naturally drops its leaves during winter dormancy. Don't be alarmed if you ordered during the cooler months and receive a bare caudex. 

Light: Requires full sun to bright, indirect exposure to maintain optimal structural integrity and encourage prolific flowering.

Water: Drought tolerant, ensure the soil is allowed to dry out completely between watering, particularly during its winter dormancy when leaf drop occurs.

Soil: The root system requires highly porous, well-draining soil that prevents excess moisture retention and protects the fleshy caudex from rot.
